On preparation before games
“Whether it was basketball or soccer I was always big in the pre- game prep and getting the teams to be in a meeting where you focused on what the keys to the game were going to be and talking about it. Not that that was the first time you were hearing it, you were doing that in the week leading up to it but just as a review. Just to bring everybody to that level of focus. In soccer, sometimes that…some players didn’t like that kind of having to do that. They liked to do their own thing, they were independent thinkers. So you did that at the chance that some players that weren’t motivated that way with that kind of focus but you had to do the same thing with everyone. So that was a routine I had on game days. Always you needed time to for that. And we were creatures of habit. We did the same thing, every time down to the minute. So I was very organized in that kind of preparation.”
