On what it was like being a coach and player at the same time

“The first year as an athlete and coach. Thankfully I had an assistant coach which was good, because he did the coaching on game day. It was really interesting because I had and inside view to what was going on on the field during game day and the position that I played; scrum half was kind of like quarterback in football. There is a lot of direction that goes on from there, there’s a lot of organization and so it was kind of a good position to be in also was a coach, so I don’t remember exactly the day to day. I do remember that it was very difficult to try to create relationships, friendships with your team mates where at the same time, you were a coach and you were making decisions and playing and so forth. I think that it made me a better coach because I was doing both at the same time. It was very difficult, but I was doing both at the same time, and that got me involved, I was asked to coach the junior provincial program with Rugby Ontario, and that got me involved in coaching. But really when I came to Western, had they not said to me, “hey we want you to coach”, who knows if I would have gotten involved and loved what I did with coaching.”
