On the philosophies of sport at Western
“There was always sort of two philosophies with regard to sport at Western. Regardless of the sport and I shouldn’t say regardless, but certainly those sports that feel that there is some sort of world out there, outside the university that focuses on that sport. Whether it’s hockey or football or volleyball or basketball, skiing or figure skating, whatever. That there was that attitude that ‘this should be just to have fun and continue their sporting endeavours at the university level. Then another faction, principally people who are in football or hockey or basketball and volleyball perhaps where there is another world out there that we want to become a development to, from where they are coming into university, develop their talents to the point where they can go to the next level, and for the sport that I was involved in, that was one of my focuses, that I wanted to take these athletes develop them, and hopefully they could go on to the next level.”
